Upcoming Semester

I have about two weeks before the next semester begins. I’m going to be teaching General Biology and MicroBiology in the Fall and the MicroBiology and Ecology in the Spring. During the semester, this blog changes focus to include many more academic topics, but I will still be posting Coding Challenges and other non-biology material. Also, I have moved my comments on film to another page called 100 films in 100 days (a project which I am slightly behind on, but feel like I can still catch up). I have considered splitting my coding posts to another site as well, but I fear that I will fractionate both my audience and my posting frequency in one fell swoop.

As a lead-in to the semester, I thought I would publish the mindmap I constructed for General Biology (I’m hoping to use it as a hyperlinked table of contents in my iBook).

I hope this is readable

Students

I invited my students to view this site – specifically, this is in order to get access to the class summaries that I have been posting here. I wondered for a while whether this would be a good idea or not. But n the end, I realized that I don’t publish anything here that I don’t want someone to see. In fact, considering the random things I post, I wonder if any of them would actually even read beyond those essays that directly describe class.

That said, I’m interested to see if any students actually do check in. So, if you’re from my class, please click on comment and say hello.

Teachers, do you blog for your students?

I’ve been wondering…

On this blog, I’ve been posting how my biology class is going each day and summarizing what I attempted to teach. Thus far, I have not told my students that I have this blog. Do any of you who teach have your students read your blog? I’ve considered it, but if I did, it would mean that I should be extra careful about what I say. Of course I don’t ever mention specific students here – in fact, I try not to talk about them much at all. I’d prefer to just talk about my experience and what I want them to take home…. but, it is something to consider.

Slightly Unhealthy Obsession

I read a post a week or so ago (I’ll look for a citation) on whether blogging was addictive. Every characteristic of an addicted blogger made by the writer was something that I think I had just done within the past five minutes: obsessive checking of the blog for comments and likes, convulsively watching my blog’s stats for activity and trolling of the blogosphere for similar blogs in order to like them so that they might come visit my page in return.

I admit it, I’m totally addicted. And I need your help.

Oh no, I don’t want to quit. I don’t really want to control it at all. What I’d prefer to have is some satisfying stats. So, to that end, could you please stop by my blog once in a while. Hit ‘like’ and maybe leave a comment. Perhaps subscribe… and then maybe get someone you know to come by and do all that again.

Right now I get a paltry handful of visits a day (I think my record was 41 – I wish I knew what I had done right that day). I’d like to see if I can get some decent numbers by the end of the summer. It would also be good for me because I know that I’ll write more (and better) if I knew there was someone out there reading.

I have two blogs, this one for DownHouse Software (although I drop anything that’s going on in my life here) and AppCampus, which is a little more serious. I’ve been trying to post some articles on technology in education. I’d also appreciate some article ideas if you have any.

So, if you can help my feed my addiction a little, thank you.
