TeachingCenter

Screen Shot 2015-08-11 at 12.31.32 PMThanks to Parker Malloy for her upworthy.com article pointing me to this video of a brilliant sketch by Key and Peele in which teachers are treated like professional athletes.

“… His father living paycheck-to-paycheck as a humble pro football player — the kid was a natural mathlete.”

and my favorite part, the BMW endorsed by AP English Literature Teacher, Ruby Ruhf. “Meet the new teacher’s pet.”

I know. It’s ridiculous. But does it show how ridiculous it would be to treat teachers (not to mention other ‘blue collar heroes’) like superstars? Or does it show how ridiculous it is to treat athletes like superstars? Maybe an athlete is a hero that kids can look up to as a role model. But are athletes the only ones who should be recognized in this way?

Cosby and Freaks

ImageMy family and I had the pleasure to see Bill Cosby live this past saturday at the Midlands Theater in Kansas City.  Of course it was a terrific show – Cosby was relaxed and seemed to enjoy the evening as much as we did and told what looked like a mix of new material and just fun conversation.

One thing stood out to me… and I could be mistaken about this. But when describing the way that women almost ritually welcome young girls into womanhood when they reach puberty, I could swear that he referenced the old movie, Freaks, as he chanted, ‘One of Us … One of Us!’ I could see it came out completely spontaneously and unplanned from him because it was one of the few times he actually chuckled at his own joke.

Holy Crap! This is spot-on

As a follow-on to This a recent replay of the Doppelgänger episode of This American Life, Ira had Fred Arminsen on to do his Ira Glass impression. On the radio Fred was good. On this video he’s perfect. The word is that this segment never actually aired on SNL, but lucky for us, we have the interwebs!

(sorry, this video is not available to be embedded, but you can catch it through the link below.)
