Undead Mathematics

ImageMultiple Zombies, the second installment of the undead mathematics series is now available at the iTunes Book store. Get this book and the first installment, In Parts:Fractional Zombies, free for a limited time.

Both books are written for an audience of about 2-3rd grade. Multiple Zombies is specifically for those learning multiplication of numbers 0-10. As such, it introduces the concept of multiplication as addition of sets and includes practice problems tied to the evolving story. Each book requires an iOS or Mac device running iBooks to read and follows the story of two friends as they battle their way through a town suffering from a nasty case of zombies.

Another Semester Ends .. A quick note

Suddenly, the end of every semester rushes in surprising me with how little time is left to finish the material I wanted to cover. As with any semester, I could have used more time. Despite reaching the end of my syllabi, I could easily have used another week or more to fully cover that material for each class.

But done is done. All in all, I’d call it a good semester.

But what’s next?

My next semester brings a return of Microbiology, where I will again try to sit material from the front end of the course in order to have more time to cover immunology at the end.

I will also be teaching Ecology. This will be a first time for me doing this class, so I expect it to be interesting. My ideal is a discussion-based class where we do a bunch of reading, maybe watch a film or two and then talk through the big ideas. Because I expect us to spend a good amount of time talking about evolution, we will be reading Jerry Coyne’s Why Evolution is True, and follow his blog for some spontaneous talk about evolution and related topics (like cats).

HHMI’s Earth Viewer complements readings from Shubbin’s Your Inner Fish

In the meantime, I’ve been invited to speak on the use of technology in the classroom- featuring my use of the iPad to present an interactive handbook, apps that go along with course material, games (and/ or gamification) as learning tools and other online resources like HHMI, NobelPrize.org or iTunes Course Manager.

I look forward to the opportunity to find out what others are doing in this area and maybe even find collaborators to help put together even better materials.

ImageThe Curse of Sisyphus, from DownHouse Software is coming soon to iTunes.

Sisyphus’ is a tale of cleverness and cunning in which the malevolent King Sisyphus offends  and then repeatedly infuriates Zeus  until the King of the Gods is forced to personally curse Sisyphus to a punishment befitting his crimes: To slave beneath a stone, pushing it each day to the peak of a great mountain in the underworld and then have it come crashing down upon him, leaving him to repeat the task again … and again … and again, throughout eternity.

But Zeus has tried to hold Sisyphus captive before only to find that the clever human is not so easily trapped.

In this volume, Sisyphus taps into the vengeance of scorned brother, the wisdom of an oracle and the might of a demigod as he masters the rules governing gravitation and motion to escape his punishment.

A Question about Kindle

Has anyone out there been publishing on Kindle? I wanted to format my children’s book, Sheriff Harry, for publishing with Amazon, but I’m afraid I’m inept at formatting for this platform.

With iBooks Author, there is a simple WYSIWYG interface, so it was simple to drop images and text in. However, Every time I try to make a kindle document, all I get is the HTML code showing through.

I’ve looked around and tried following other’s advice, but so far haven’t been able to make it work. Any help would be greatly appreciated (suggestions, templates, websites with good walkthroughs).

Thanks very much in advance.

-Jack

Give it a Kickstart

Today marks day one of my kickstarter fundraising. DownHouse Software is raising money to hire an artist to illustrate the second book in the mythic science series, tentatively titled The Curse of Sisyphus. This story explores the physics of motion and gravity using the story of King Sisyphus’ legendary punishment by the god Zeus. Additionally, funds will be used to improve the interface and gamify the DownHouse Software Website in a way that promotes exploration of DHS titles and provides a space to practice and expand the knowledge gained by reading the books.

To support this project or to just check it out in greater detail visit my kickstarter site: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1681676168/mythic-science-teaching-science-through-stories

Thanks for your support – whether it just amounts to reading my blog or to supporting DHS.
